Thousands of people from across the country are converging at Murambinda, the venue for this year’s Independence celebrations, swelling the crowd as the day of the celebration approaches.
President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa’s initiative to hold the 44th Independence celebrations in different provinces each year has led to the historic decision to hold this year’s celebrations in Murambinda, a growth point that is known for illicit activities.
In 2022, President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa made history by hosting the Independence celebrations in Bulawayo, breaking a 42-year tradition of holding the event in Harare.
He also emphasized his commitment to leaving no one and no place behind in his development agenda.
In 2023, the Independence celebrations were held in Mt Darwin, where a historic event took place with the Zimbabwean soccer giants Highlanders and Dynamos playing a match for the first time in the town, a feat that was previously considered impossible.
“Last year, those in Bindura had the opportunity to witness Dynamos vs Highlanders play in Mt Darwin, an opportunity we never thought would come our way.
“We would like to express our gratitude to President Emmerson Mnangagwa for his commitment to ‘leaving no one and no place behind,’ as it has resulted in our town being chosen to host this year’s Independence celebrations,” said Tichaona Masimo, a Murambinda resident.
A local vendor, Jessica Kanoyangwa, expressed her delight at the positive changes that had been brought about by the preparations for the Independence celebrations in Murambinda.
“We are thrilled with the transformation of Murambinda due to the preparations for the Independence celebrations.
We have never seen this level of development before, and we are grateful to His Excellency for his decision to rotate the celebrations to different provinces,” she said.
Airtime vendor Nyaradzo confirmed that all sectors of the local economy in Murambinda have been experiencing a boost in business since the announcement of the town as the host for the Independence celebrations.
“Since the announcement of Murambinda as the host of the Independence celebrations, all sectors of the local economy, including vendors, shop owners, transport operators, and accommodation service providers, have been enjoying brisk business.
“We have never made money like this before, and we hope we’ll have this opportunity again,” said Nyaradzo.
President Mnangagwa’s decision to rotate the hosting of the Independence celebrations among different provinces has yielded tangible benefits for Murambinda, with the event expected to catalyze long-lasting positive change in the town.
